Weeping Silence

Come and meet Weeping Silence, the atmospheric metal band from Malta that you undoubtedly will be hearing a LOT about in 2012! It might come as a surprise that the band has been around for nearly 15 years, has three full-length albums under their belts, and is featured on both volumes of the Des Filles et des Riffs compilation albums. Truly a hidden treasure that is still largely underground, perhaps because of years-long delays between recording each album and releasing it -- making their albums something of a time capsule, rather than a reflection of Weeping Silence’s current sound.

But a welcome change is in the wind ... Weeping Silence is in the process of recording their new album, which will be released in 2012! Sonic Cathedral’s Robin Stryker sat down with vocalist Rachel Grech and bassist Sean Pollacco to chat about their upcoming album, their very special guest vocalist, strange hobbies, and much more. We feel so honored that Weeping Silence shared their exciting news with Sonic Cathedral readers first. Dive in for a closer look!

Amanda Somerville - Trillium Interview
Performed in October 2011

Amanda Somerville

It’s no surprise to the metal world that American-born singer-songwriter Amanda Somerville has (finally!) made her own metal album. She has worked as a co-lyricist and choir / backing vocalist for Epica, After Forever, Kamelot, Avantasia, and a slew of other European bands. And don’t forget her involvement in the metal opera Aina, last year’s Kiske / Somerville duets album with ex-Helloween singer Michael Kiske, and After Forever guitarist Sander Gommans’ thrashing HDK project. Somewhere in between all that work, however, Somerville has found time to develop her own project: Trillium, a hybrid of rock and metal. If you listen to the Trillium album, Alloy, you’ll hear bits of gothic, symphonic, classic rock, heavy metal, and other styles that make up Somerville’s crossbreeding.

Prior to the release of Alloy, Sonic Cathedral staff writer Sara Letourneau chatted with Somerville about all things Trillium. What compelled Somerville to start this project in the first place? Did these metal songs bring out a different side of her that fans don’t hear on her usual pop albums? Will she tour to promote Alloy? And what about that creepy album cover? Find out the answers to these questions and much more below!

Nemesea Interview
Performed in November 2011

Nemesea

The Dutch alternative rockers, Nemesea (pronounced “nem-eh-see”), are a band that still get a lot of airtime at Maison de Stryker, four years after the release of their sophomore album, In Control. Their music is an appealing combination of heavy riffs and symphonic elements with pop sensibilities and electronic influences. Yet, they never quite reached the level of name-recognition that the quality of their music deserved. Puzzling, considering Nemesea was the first band to successfully fund an album through Sellaband, after raising $51,000 in fan donations. Well, that’s about to change!

Nemesea is back with their third album, The Quiet Resistance … this time on the powerhouse label, Napalm Records. Sonic Cathedral’s Robin Stryker chatted with vocalist/lyricist Manda about Nemesea’s new album, the band’s darkest days, mixing romance and music, and much more. Dive in to find out more!

Issa Øversveen

Isabell “Issa” Øversveen, the Norwegian rocker, returns with her second album, The Storm, which is packed with melodic rock anthems that likely will appeal to mainstream music fans as well. Don’t get me wrong. This is no insipid pop album (oh, the cringing horror!), but rock with catchy hook lines, solid guitar riffs and crisp production.

Sonic Cathedral’s Robin Stryker caught up with Issa to chat about The Storm, the long journey to becoming a solo artist, her guilty pleasures, and much more. Dive in to learn more!
