Leaves’ Eyes/Firewind - Live in Paris Divan du Monde

Leaves’ Eyes/Firewind - Live in Paris Divan du Monde – 9/25/12

I may be getting better at this whole going-to-concerts-outside-the-US thing, but I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to understand why concerts in France start and end so much earlier than in the US, yet require missing dinner in the process (and yes, dinner at 11 pm is also a bizzare concept to me, yet I certainly saw people eating dinner after the show. Alas, to each their own…)

August 11 – August 12, 2012
Hildesheim, Germany

M'era Luna 2012

M'era Luna is one of the biggest goth festivals in Germany, with 21,000 to 24,000 people attending it each year. This time it happened on August 11 (Saturday) and August 12 (Sunday), with over 21,000 people. It also offers a great deal of metal, and almost all of the major names in the Femme Metal genre have played there: Epica, Leaves' Eyes, Within Temptation, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, The Gathering, and the list goes on. This year, there were only few female fronted bands, but each of them had something quite special to it, which made the overall impression anything but disappointing. A classical string quartet, an Industrial Metal band, and a Pagan Folk band, the artists in this review could hardly be more diverse, and are yet equally appealing. But before getting into the details of their music and shows, there are some things worth saying about the festival.

Tristania – Live in Paris
September 18 – Glaz’art

There are many things that are better in Europe than in the US. Chiefly among them, for me at least, is the music scene. Since about 90 percent of what I listen to comes from Europe, I normally have to wait for bands to become big enough to tour the States, and more frequently, I end up mentally drooling over a dream lineup touring around Europe, so incredibly far away from where I live. This time, however, things are different. I finally find myself on the other side of the pond, the European metal scene as my oyster. As my awful luck would have it, I’m missing Nightwish, Kamelot, and Epica touring the US this fall, but at least I finally got to see Tristania, a band that has long been on my must-see list. And the icing on the cake? Supporting these gothic metal legends are two other female fronted bands, Sarah Jezebel Deva and Fenrir. Though neither band was a particularly big blip on my radar (I had never even heard of Fenrir), I was excited to see what they had to offer.

ROCKHARZ 2012
July 12th to 14th, 2012 / Ballenstedt, Germany

Arch Enemy, Lacuna Coil, and Epica – don't panic – no, you did not miss Metal Female Voices Fest, it is still on and it's way too early in the year. This amazing line-up was part of the ROCKHARZ festival, July 12th to 14th 2012, in Ballenstedt, Germany. When people think of European summer festivals, the first – and in many cases only – one they can think of is Wacken. There is a vast range of other festivals though, and many of them can offer a bunch of really good bands, a nice atmosphere, and a lot of fun. All of this was the case at ROCKHARZ this year, which is why I didn't hesitate for even a minute after a friend suggested we should go.

Rockharz

After an overall impression of the festival, you'll find something about the shows of the female fronted bands that played there. Unfortunately, there were none on day one, but days two and three made up for that. In the order of their sets, there are Djerv, Epica, Deadlock, Lacuna Coil, and Arch Enemy. I also couldn't help adding a little bit about some male fronted bands in the end, and I can only recommend to not skip that part.
